Universal credit

The Government is changing the way that benefits are paid.  Universal credit is a means tested benefit that will replace most existing benefits if you are aged between 18 – 64 years of age and receive any of these benefits:

  • Income-based jobseeker’s allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related employment and support allowance (ESA)
  • Income support
  • Housing benefit
  • Working tax credit
  • Child tax credit

Universal credit will be paid monthly (in arrears) into your bank account.  The payment will include your rent and housing benefit costs, this means that you will need to budget and pay your rent yourself.

The easiest way to do this is to set up a Direct Debit with us to make sure your rent is paid on time,  every time.  Please call our Income Team on 0117 942 4600 (select option 2) to set up a Direct Debit.

Visit the Citizens Advice Bureau’s website for more information about universal credit.  You can also check how much universal credit you might be entitled to.

Here is a short video which explains how universal credit works.
